The saying is "Enjoy it if you can’t seem to avoid it." As for me, I reverse the saying and use to say, "Avoid it if you can’t enjoy." That’s perhaps why I stuck with English- I thought I could enjoy it.
And I could. As I ambled through English in music and literature, something that if not entranced by English, would have been a disastrously catastrophic boringness, I was adjusting myself as an American born in Korea. Suddenly, I found myself plugging my old headphone to the raps of Eminem, or lying down in the town bookstore, drilling down into the books about how Mr.Dollitle drove back to England in a great sea snail.
Literature was an aspect in which I literally fell in love with as an English literate. Not just the aspect of reading, no, the writing was as attractive as that, maybe even more. Unlike reading, where I just see the created world of the author, I create the world. I become the owner of that very world; I know the deepest parts of it, and I know everything about what will happen, but the characters do not know because I made them to, and therefore lays the great fun in writing- I plan the plot, and send forth my characters into the current. I may sound strange, like a mad writer, but I am no more than a person who likes to be on the controls of the situation.
Debate was one of the aspects I particularly liked. The whole debate felt like I was waging war on the opponents through arguments and refutations. When they present their battle formations, I penetrate the weak side, and overwhelm their army. Logic and sharpness helped me dominate the war. This war did not contain violence, did not leave gashes anywhere including the heart, and only left me excited and developed.
Perhaps I sound mad. Some friends don’t understand my love towards English. Nor will some people, who are fed up of the "Enjoy-Studying-and-you’ll-do-it-well" essay. However, I do not say that I enjoyed English because I couldn’t avoid it. I say that what I cannot enjoy, I avoided it, and English was certainly not one of them.
